It’s been an eventful year for Vancouver natives Said The Whale, to say the least. The success of their last album, Islands Disappear, and the news of their powerful live show saw them nominated for – and win – a 2011 Juno Award for New Group of the Year. Recently they took home second prize and $75,000 in the PEAK Performance Project, a contest put on annually by Vancouver radio station 100.5 The Peak. However, it’s not all been smooth sailing. On tour in Sacramento, Ca., their tour van’s trailer was stolen along with its contents: thousands of dollars worth of equipment. With SXSW shows pending, things could have easily gone sour, but the band remained positive. “We’re pretty positive people in general,” says singer Tyler Bancroft. “We needed to deal with this one way or another, so we thought we might as well do it with a smile on our faces.” Not to be slowed down, Said The Whale embarked on another cross-Canada tour in the spring with indie darlings Tokyo Police Club and Toronto up-and-coming favourites Dinosaur Bones, as well as dates over the summer at festivals in the U.K.
